04 September 2024 - Hike: Blitzingen to Reckingen

After my travel adventures yesterday I was pleasantly surprised that I had no problem getting up and down to the hotel buffet breakfast at 7am.  I had two Milchkaffe's and I was ready to do some hiking!  This was an easy hike in the Goms Valley from Blitzingen to Reckingen.  I walked  across the street and caught the train from Brig up the valley to Blitzingen and then hike to Reckingen.  You can see in the pictures that the station in Blitzingen is tiny - a "stop on request" station.  I was the only one that got off the train and was greeted by some cows as I started the hike.

The hike was a gentle incline that followed the Rhöne River upstream.  The Rhöne is called the "Rotten" by the locals, and the path is known as the Rottenweg.  The weather was overcast but really brought out the green in all of the meadows I passed through.

For lunch at the end of the hike in Reckingen I stopped at the Hotel Joopi and tried a local Goms dish called "Cholera". It was really good (and I learned that the "C" is silent in Cholera).  I caught the train back to Brig after the filling lunch.

  • While waiting for the train the chef on the Glacier Express stood next to me and noticed this little tomato plant growing next to the track. We had a good laugh thinking about the fertilizer...

  • Cholera!!!  It was fantastic. Extremely filling. I came to find out that this was a very unique version - it was far prettier than the Cholera found in restaurants further down the valley and in Brig.
